Before a day in the fields, on board or in the shield wall, a pot of porridge stood over the fire in the North. Oats gave strength and lasting fullness, wild berries brought sweetness and colour - porridge is no modern invention, it is a Northern inheritance. This recipe from Viking Feast takes ten minutes and makes any breakfast a little more epic.

The Skald’s Tip

Fresh berries in summer, preserved ones in winter - the Norse knew both. A handful of chopped nuts on top turns this into a warrior’s breakfast. And if you like it sweet, try our honey-baked apples for dessert.
